1. CORO
Herr, unser Herrscher, dessen Ruhm
Lord, our ruler, whose renown
in allen Landen herrlich ist!
is glorified in all lands!
Zeig uns durch deine Passion,
Reveal to us through your passion
daß du, der wahre Gottessohn,
how you, the true Son of God,
zu aller Zeit,
at every moment,
auch in der größten Niedrigkeit,
even in those of greatest humiliation,
verherrlicht worden bist!
have been glorified!
2a. RECITATIVO
Evangelist
Jesus ging mit seinen Jüngern über den Bach Kidron,
Jesus, with his disciples, crossed over the stream of Kidron,
da war ein Garten, darein ging Jesus und seine Jünger.
there was a garden there which Jesus entered with his disciples.
Judas aber, der ihn verriet, wußte den Ort auch,
Now Judas, who was to betray him, knew the location as well,
denn Jesus versammlete sich oft daselbst mit seinen Jüngern.
for Jesus had often gathered with his disciples in that very place.
Da nun Judas zu sich hatte genommen die Schar
Now, as Judas had brought with him a horde
und der Hohenpriester und Pharisäer Diener,
and the henchmen of the chief priests and pharisees,
kommt er dahin mit Fackeln, Lampen und mit Waffen.
he came forward with torches, lamps and with weapons.
Als nun Jesus wußte alles, was ihm begegnen sollte,
But, since Jesus knew everything that would confront him,
ging er hinaus und sprach zu ihnen:

Ich bin’s.
I am he.

Judas aber, der ihn verriet, stund auch bei ihnen.
However Judas, who was to betray him, was also standing among them.
Als nun Jesus zu ihnen sprach:
But when Jesus said to them:
Ich bin’s, wichen sie zurücke und fielen zu Boden.
“I am he” they stepped back and fell to the ground.
Da fragete er sie abermal:
So he asked them once again:

Wen suchet ihr?
Whom do you seek?

Sie aber sprachen:
And they said:

Ich hab’s euch gesagt, daß ich’s sei,
I told you that I am he,
suchet ihr denn mich, so lasset diese gehen!
if it is me then that you seek, then let these others go!

O große Lieb, o Lieb ohn alle Maße,
O great love, O love beyond all measure,
die dich gebracht auf diese Marterstraße!
which has led you upon this path to martyrdom!
Ich lebte mit der Welt in Lust und Freuden,
I have lived with the world, in pleasure and joy,
und du mußt leiden.

Auf daß das Wort erfüllet würde, welches er sagte:
By this, the word was to be fulfilled, when he said:
Ich habe der keine verloren, die du mir gegeben hast.
“I have lost none of them, whom you have given me.”
Da hatte Simon Petrus ein Schwert und zog es aus
Now, Simon Peter had a sword and he drew it out
und schlug nach des Hohenpriesters Knecht und hieb ihm sein recht Ohr ab;
and swung at the high priest’s servant and severed his right ear;
und der Knecht hieß Malchus.
and the servant’s name was Malchus.
Da sprach Jesus zu Petro:
Then Jesus said to Peter:
Jesus
Stecke dein Schwert in die Scheide!
Put your sword back in the sheath!
Soll ich den Kelch nicht trinken,
Shall I not drink of the cup
den mir mein Vater gegeben hat?
that my Father has given me?

Dein Will gescheh, Herr Gott, zugleich
Your will be done, Lord God, the same
auf Erden wie im Himmelreich.
on earth as in the kingdom of heaven.
Gib uns Geduld in Leidenszeit,
Grant us patience in time of suffering,
gehorsam sein in Lieb und Leid;
to be obedient in love and passion;
wehr und steur allem Fleisch und Blut,
bridle and steer both flesh and blood,

Die Schar aber und der Oberhauptmann
So the horde and captain
und die Diener der Jüden nahmen Jesum
and the henchmen of the Jews seized Jesus
und bunden ihn und führeten ihn aufs erste zu Hannas,
and bound him and led him first to Annas,
der war Kaiphas Schwäher, welcher des Jahres Hoherpriester war.
who was father-in-law of Caiaphas, that year’s high priest.
Es war aber Kaiphas, der den Jüden riet,
However, it was Caiaphas, who had advised the Jews,
es wäre gut, daß ein Mensch würde umbracht für das Volk.
that it would be good if one person was slain for the people.

Von den Stricken meiner Sünden
mich zu entbinden,
That I might be released from the cords of my sins

Simon Peter and another disciple, however, followed behind Jesus.

Ich folge dir gleichfalls mit freudigen Schritten
I follow you as well, with gladsome strides
und lasse dich nicht,
and will not leave you,
mein Leben, mein Licht.

Complete the course
und höre nicht auf,
and do not cease,
selbst an mir zu ziehen, zu schieben, zu bitten.

10. RECITATIVO

Derselbige Jünger war dem Hohenpriester bekannt
This particular [other] disciple was known by the high priest
und ging mit Jesu hinein in des Hohenpriesters Palast.
and went with Jesus inside into the high priest’s palace.
Petrus aber stund draußen für der Tür.
Peter however stood outside by the gate.
Da ging der andere Jünger, der dem Hohenpriester bekannt war, hinaus
Then the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out
und redete mit der Türhüterin und führete Petrum hinein.
and spoke with the woman keeping the gate and brought Peter in.
Da sprach die Magd, die Türhüterin, zu Petro:
Then this maid, the gatekeeper, said to Peter:
Maid
Bist du nicht dieses Menschen Jünger einer?
Are you not one of this man’s disciples?
Evangelist
Er sprach:
He spoke:
Peter
Ich bin’s nicht.
I am not.
Evangelist
Es stunden aber die Knechte und Diener
Standing there, however, were the servants and henchmen
und hatten ein Kohlfeu’r gemacht (denn es war kalt)
and they had made a charcoal fire (for it was cold)
und wärmeten sich.
and warmed themselves.
Petrus aber stund bei ihnen und wärmete sich.
Peter also stood with them and warmed himself.
Aber der Hohepriester fragte Jesum um seine Jünger und um seine Lehre.
But the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teachings.
Jesus antwortete ihm:
Jesus replied to him:
Jesus
Ich habe frei, öffentlich geredet für der Welt.
I have spoken freely, openly before the world.
Ich habe allezeit gelehret in der Schule und in dem Tempel,
I have continuously instructed in the synagogue and in the temple,
da alle Jüden zusammenkommen,
where all Jews assemble,
und habe nichts im Verborgnen geredt.
and have said nothing in secret.
Was fragest du mich darum?
Why do you question me about this?
Frage die darum, die gehöret haben,
Question them about it, who have heard
was ich zu ihnen geredet habe!
what I have spoken to them!
Siehe, dieselbigen wissen,
Behold, these very people know
was ich gesaget habe.

Als er aber solches redete,
When he had said this, however,
gab der Diener einer, die dabeistunden,
Jesu einen Backenstreich und sprach:

Solltest du dem Hohenpriester also antworten?
Is this how you answer the high priest?

Jesus aber antwortete:
Jesus however replied:
Jesus
Hab ich übel geredt,
If I have spoken falsely
so beweise es, daß es böse sei,
then prove that it is wrong,
hab ich aber recht geredt,
but if I have spoken the truth
was schlägest du mich?
how is it you strike me?
11. CORALE
Wer hat dich so geschlagen,
Who has struck you so,
mein Heil, und dich mit Plagen
so übel zugericht’?
my salvation, and so cruelly
smitten you with affliction?
Du bist ja nicht ein Sünder
You are indeed not a sinner
wie wir und unsre Kinder,
like we and our children,
von Missetaten weißt du nicht.
of misdeeds you know not.
Ich, ich und meine Sünden,
I, I and my sins,
die sich wie Körnlein finden
which are to be found like grains
des Sandes an dem Meer,
of sand at the sea,
die haben dir erreget
these have spurred against you
das Elend, das dich schläget,
this horridness, that strikes you,

Und Hannas sandte ihn gebunden zu dem Hohenpriester Kaiphas.
And Annas dispatched him bound to High Priest Caiaphas.
Simon Petrus stund und wärmete sich, da sprachen sie zu ihm:
Simon Peter rose and warmed himself, then they said to him:

Bist du nicht seiner Jünger einer?
Are you not one of his disciples?
12c. RECITATIVO
Evangelist
Er leugnete aber und sprach:
But he denied it, and said:
Peter
Ich bin’s nicht.
I am not.
Evangelist
Spricht des Hohenpriesters Knecht’ einer,
ein Gefreundter des, dem Petrus das Ohr abgehauen hatte:
One of the high priest’s servants,
a relative of the one whose ear Peter had cut off, spoke up:
Servant
Sahe ich dich nicht im Garten bei ihm?
Did I not see you in the garden with him?
Evangelist
Da verleugnete Petrus abermal,
Then Peter denied it once more,
und alsobald krähete der Hahn.
and immediately the cock crowed.
Da gedachte Petrus an die Worte Jesu
Peter then remembered the words of Jesus
und ging hinaus und weinete bitterlich.
and went out and wept bitterly.

Ach, mein Sinn,
Alas, my conscience,
wo willt du endlich hin,
where will you go in the end,
wo soll ich mich erquicken?
where shall I find relief?
Bleib ich hier,
Shall I remain here
oder wünsch ich mir
Berg und Hügel auf den Rücken?
or wish to leave hill and mountain behind me?
Bei der Welt ist gar kein Rat,
In this world there is no solution whatsoever
und im Herzen
and in my heart
stehn die Schmerzen
reside the pains
meiner Missetat,
from my misdeeds,
weil der Knecht den Herrn verleugnet hat.

Petrus, der nicht denkt zurück,
Peter, not pondering the past,
seinen Gott verneinet,
denies his God,
der doch auf ein’ ernsten Blick
bitterlichen weinet.
yet upon earnest hindsight
he bitterly weeps.
Jesu, blicke mich auch an,
Jesus, gaze on me too
wenn ich nicht will büßen;
when I do not seek penance;
wenn ich Böses hab getan,
when I have done wrong,
rühre mein Gewissen!
stir my conscience!

Nach der Predigt (Following the Sermon)
15. CORALE
Christus, der uns selig macht,
Christ, who makes us blessed,
kein Bös’ hat begangen,
has committed no wrong,
der ward für uns in der Nacht
als ein Dieb gefangen,
he was apprehended for us
in the night, like a thief,
geführt für gottlose Leut
and escorted before godless people
und fälschlich verklaget,
and falsely accused,
verlacht, verhöhnt und verspeit,
derided, ridiculed and spat upon

Da führeten sie Jesum von Kaiphas vor das Richthaus, und es war frühe.
Then they led Jesus away from Caiaphas to the courthouse, and it was morning.
Und sie gingen nicht in das Richthaus,
But they did not enter the courthouse
auf daß sie nicht unrein würden,
that they might not become unclean,
sondern Ostern essen möchten.
for they wished to dine for Passover.
Da ging Pilatus zu ihnen heraus und sprach:
Then Pilate went out before them and spoke:

Was bringet ihr für Klage wider diesen Menschen?
What accusation do you bring against this person?

Sie antworteten und sprachen zu ihm:
They replied and said to him:

Wäre dieser nicht ein Übeltäter,
If this man were not a wrongdoer
wir hätten dir ihn nicht überantwortet.
we would not have delivered him to you.

Da sprach Pilatus zu ihnen:
Then Pilate said to them:
Pilate
So nehmet ihr ihn hin und richtet ihn nach eurem Gesetze!
So take him away and try him according to your own laws!

Da sprachen die Jüden zu ihm:
Here the Jews said to him:

Wir dürfen niemand töten.
We are not allowed to execute anyone.
16e. RECITATIVO

Auf daß erfüllet würde das Wort Jesu,
By this, the word of Jesus would be fulfilled
welches er sagte, da er deutete,

welches Todes er sterben würde.

Da ging Pilatus wieder hinein in das Richthaus
Pilate then returned into the courthouse
und rief Jesu und sprach zu ihm:

Redest du das von dir selbst,
Do you say this of your own accord,
oder haben’s dir andere von mir gesagt?
or have others spoken of me, to you?

Bin ich ein Jüde?
Am I a Jew?
Dein Volk und die Hohenpriester haben
Your people and the chief priests have
dich mir überantwortet;
delivered you to me;
was hast du getan?

Mein Reich ist nicht von dieser Welt;
My kingdom is not of this world;
wäre mein Reich von dieser Welt,
were my kingdom of this world
meine Diener würden darob kämpfen,
my attendants would be fighting in order
daß ich den Jüden nicht überantwortet würde;
that I not be delivered to the Jews;
aber nun ist mein Reich nicht von dannen.
but as it is, my kingdom is not of this place.

Ach großer König, groß zu allen Zeiten,
O, great King, great at every moment,
wie kann ich gnugsam diese Treu ausbreiten?
how can I sufficiently match your loyalty?
Keins Menschen Herze mag indes ausdenken,
No human’s heart can even fathom
was dir zu schenken.

Ich kann’s mit meinen Sinnen nicht erreichen,
I cannot in my own conscience conjure up
womit doch dein Erbarmen zu vergleichen.

How then can I repay you for your acts of love
by any deed?

Da sprach Pilatus zu ihm:

So bist du dennoch ein König?
So you are a king after all?

Jesus antwortete:
Jesus replied:
Jesus
Du sagst’s, ich bin ein König.
You say it, that I am a king.
Ich bin dazu geboren und in die Welt kommen,
I was born and came into the world for this
daß ich die Wahrheit zeugen soll.
that I might witness to the truth.
Wer aus der Wahrheit ist,
Whoever is of this truth
der höret meine Stimme.

Spricht Pilatus zu ihm:

Was ist Wahrheit?
What is truth?

Und da er das gesaget, ging er wieder hinaus zu den Jüden und spricht zu ihnen:
And having said this, he went out again to the Jews and told them:
Pilate
Ich finde keine Schuld an ihm.
I find no guilt in him.
Ihr habt aber eine Gewohnheit,
You do however have a custom [at Passover]
daß ich euch einen losgebe;
that I release someone for you;
wollt ihr nun, daß ich euch der Jüden König losgebe?
would you like me to release the King of the Jews for you?

Da schrieen sie wieder allesamt und sprachen:
But they again shouted altogether, saying:

Nicht diesen, sondern Barrabam!
Not his one, but rather Barabbas!
18c. RECITATIVO
Evangelist
Barrabas aber war ein Mörder.
Barabbas, however, was a murderer.
Da nahm Pilatus Jesum und geißelte ihn.
So Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.

Betrachte, meine Seel’, mit ängstlichem Vergnügen,
Consider, my soul, with hesitant contentment,
mit bittrer Lust und halb beklemmtem Herzen
with bitter desire and half-grieving heart
dein höchstes Gut in Jesu Schmerzen,
your greatest possession in the suffering of Jesus,
wie dir auf Dornen, so ihn stechen,
how for you, upon the thorns which stabbed him so,
die Himmelsschlüsselblumen blühn!
primroses (Keys of Heaven) now bloom!
Du kannst viel süße Frucht von seiner Wermut brechen
You can harvest much sweet fruit from his wormwood
drum sieh ohn Unterlaß auf ihn!
therefore gaze upon him without ceasing!

Erwäge, wie sein blutgefärbter Rücken
in allen Stücken
Ponder how his blood splattered back,
in its every aspect
dem Himmel gleiche geht,
compares to the heavens,
daran, nachdem die Wasserwogen
wherein, after the surging waters
von unsrer Sündflut sich verzogen,
from the flood of our sins recede
der allerschönste Regenbogen
the most beautiful of all rainbows
als Gottes Gnadenzeichen steht!
emerges as God’s symbol of grace!

Und die Kriegsknechte flochten eine Krone von Dornen
And the soldiers braided a crown of thorns
und satzten sie auf sein Haupt
and placed it upon his head
und legten ihm ein Purpurkleid an und sprachen:

Sei gegrüßet, lieber Jüdenkönig!
Hail, beloved King of the Jews!

Und gaben ihm Backenstreiche.
And slapped him across the face.
Da ging Pilatus wieder heraus und sprach zu ihnen:
Then Pilate emerged again and said to them:

Sehet, ich führe ihn heraus zu euch,
Behold, I bring him out before you
daß ihr erkennet,
that you might concede
daß ich keine Schuld an ihm finde.
that I find no guilt in him.

Also ging Jesus heraus
Thus Jesus came out
und trug eine Dornenkrone und Purpurkleid.
wearing a crown of thorns and purple robe.
Und er sprach zu ihnen:

Sehet, welch ein Mensch!
Behold, such a man!

Da ihn die Hohenpriester und die Diener sahen,
When the chief priests and the henchmen saw him
schrieen sie und sprachen:
they shouted and said:

Kreuzige, kreuzige!
Crucify! Crucify!

Pilatus sprach zu ihnen:
Pilate said to them:

Nehmet ihr ihn hin und kreuziget ihn;
Take him yourselves and crucify him,
denn ich finde keine Schuld an ihm!
for I find no guilt in him!

Die Jüden antworteten ihm:
The Jews replied to him:

Wir haben ein Gesetz,
We have a law,
und nach dem Gesetz soll er sterben;
and according to this law he should die;
denn er hat sich selbst zu Gottes Sohn gemacht.
for he has claimed himself the Son of God.

Da Pilatus das Wort hörete,
When Pilate heard these words
fürchtet’ er sich noch mehr
he was even more afraid
und ging wieder hinein in das Richthaus
and he went back into the courthouse
und spricht zu Jesu:

Von wannen bist du?
Where do you come from?
Evangelist
Aber Jesus gab ihm keine Antwort.
But Jesus gave him no answer.
Da sprach Pilatus zu ihm:
So Pilate said to him:
Pilate
Redest du nicht mit mir?
You will not speak with me?
Weißest du nicht,
Do you not know
daß ich Macht habe, dich zu kreuzigen,
that I have the power to crucify you,
und Macht habe, dich loszugehen?
and I have the power to release you?
Evangelist
Jesus antwortete:
Jesus replied:
Jesus
Du hättest keine Macht über mich,
You would have no power over me
wenn sie dir nicht wäre von oben herab gegeben;
were it not granted to you from above;
darum, der mich dir überantwortet hat,
therefore, the one who delivered me unto you,
der hat’s größ’re Sünde.
he has the greater sin.

Von dem an trachtete Pilatus,
From this point on Pilate strove
wie er ihn losließe.
to have him released.

Durch dein Gefängnis, Gottes Sohn,
Through your imprisonment, Son of God,
muß uns die Freiheit kommen;
freedom must be procured for us;
Dein Kerker ist der Gnadenthron,
Your jail is the throne of grace,
die Freistatt aller Frommen;
a sanctuary for all the devout;
denn gingst du nicht die Knechtschaft ein,
for were you not to enter into this bondage
müßt unsre Knechtschaft ewig sein.

Die Jüden aber schrieen und sprachen:
The Jews however shouted, saying:

Lässest du diesen los,
If you let this man go
so bist du des Kaisers Freund nicht;
then you are no friend of Caesar;
denn wer sich zum Könige machet,
for whoever makes himself king
der ist wider den Kaiser.
he is against Caesar.

Da Pilatus das Wort hörete,
When Pilate had heard these words
führete er Jesum heraus und satzte sich auf den Richtstuhl,
he led Jesus out and sat down himself upon the judge’s bench,
an der Stätte, die da heißet:
at the place that was called
Hochpflaster, auf Ebräisch aber: Gabbatha.
the High Pavement, or in Hebrew: Gabbatha
Es war aber der Rüsttag in Ostern um die sechste Stunde,
It was, however, about the sixth hour (noon)
in the day of preparation for the Passover,
und er spricht zu den Jüden:
and he said to the Jews:
Pilate
Sehet, das ist euer König!
Behold, this is your king!

Sie schrieen aber:
But they shouted

Weg, weg mit dem,
Away, away with him
kreuzige ihn!

Spricht Pilatus zu ihnen:
Pilate said to them:

Soll ich euren König kreuzigen?
Shall I crucify your king?

Die Hohenpriester antworteten:
The high priests answered:

Wir haben keinen König denn den Kaiser.
We have no king but Caesar.

Da überantwortete er ihn,
Then he handed him over
daß er gekreuziget würde.
that he would be crucified.
Sie nahmen aber Jesum und führeten ihn hin.
So they seized Jesus and led him away.
Und er trug sein Kreuz und ging hinaus zur Stätte,
And he carried his cross and went forth to the site
die da heißet Schädelstätt,
that is called the Place of the Skull,
welche heißet auf Ebräisch: Golgatha.
which in Hebrew is called Golgotha.

geht aus euren Marterhöhlen.
proceed from your caverns of torment.
Eilt – Wohin? – nach Golgatha!
Hasten – to where? – to Golgotha!
Nehmet an des Glaubens Flügel,
Assume the wings of faith,
Flieht – Wohin? – zum Kreuzeshügel,
Take flight – to where? – to the mount of the cross,
eure Wohlfahrt blüht allda!
your welfare blooms at this place!

Allda kreuzigten sie ihn,
At this place they crucified him
und mit ihm zween andere zu beiden Seiten,
and with him two others on either side
Jesum aber mitten inne.

Pilatus aber schrieb eine Überschrift
Pilate, however, wrote out an inscription
und satzte sie auf das Kreuz,
and placed in upon the cross
