ERSTER TEIL (Part 1)
1. CORO
Die Elenden sollen essen,
The wretched shall eat,
daß sie satt werden,
that they be satisfied
und die nach dem Herrn fragen,
and those who request of the Lord
werden ihn preisen.
will praise him.
Euer Herz soll ewiglich leben.
Your hearts shall live eternally.
2. RECITATIVO BASSO
Was hilft des Purpurs Majestät,
Of what help is the purple [robe] of majesty
da sie vergeht?
once they die?
Was hilft der größte Überfluß,
Of what help is great accumulation
weil alles, so wir sehen,
since everything as we see it
verschwinden muß?
must disappear?
Was hilft der Kitzel eitler Sinnen,
Of what help is the obsession of vain thoughts
denn unser Leib muß selbst von hinnen?
for our bodies must get themselves away [from it]?
Ach, wie geschwind ist es geschehen,
Alas, how rapidly it does transpire
daß Reichtum, Wollust, Pracht
that riches, lust and pomp
den Geist zur Hölle macht!

Mein Jesus soll mein alles sein!
My Jesus shall be my all!
Mein Purpur ist sein teures Blut,
My purple [robe] is his precious blood,
er selbst mein allerhöchstes Gut,
he himself alone my ever highest good,
und seines Geistes Liebesglut
and his Spirit’s ember of love
mein allersüß’ster Freudenwein.

Gott stürzet und erhöhet
God topples and elevates
in Zeit und Ewigkeit.

Wer in der Welt den Himmel sucht,
Whoever seeks Heaven upon the world
wird dort verflucht.
will there be damned.
Wer aber hier die Hölle überstehet,
Whoever however weathers the inferno
wird dort erfreut.
will there be regaled.
5. ARIA SOPRANO
Ich nehme mein Leiden mit Freuden auf mich.
I accept my suffering with gladness.
Wer Lazarus’ Plagen
geduldig ertragen,
Whoever can patiently endure
the affliction of Lazarus
den nehmen die Engel zu sich.
will be admitted by angels.
6. RECITATIVO SOPRANO
Indes schenkt Gott ein gut Gewissen,
Meanwhile God bestows a good conscience
dabei ein Christe kann
whereby a Christian can
ein kleines Gut mit großer Lust genießen.
enjoy small gifts with great delight.
Ja, führt er auch durch lange Not zum Tod,
Indeed, also he steers through long misery unto death,
so ist es doch am Ende wohlgetan.

Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan;
Whatever God does it is beneficial;
muß ich den Kelch gleich schmecken,
if I must now taste of the cup
der bitter ist nach meinem Wahn,
made bitter by my delusions,
laß ich mich doch nicht schrecken,
let me indeed not be afraid,
weil doch zuletzt
for indeed at the last
ich werd ergötzt
I will indulge
mit süßem Trost im Herzen;
with sweet solace in my heart;
da weichen alle Schmerzen.

Nur eines kränkt
Just one thing aggrieves
ein christliches Gemüte:
a Christian soul:
wenn es an seines Geistes Armut denkt.

Es gläubt zwar Gottes Güte,
It believes of course in God’s goodness
die alles neu erschafft;
which makes all things new;
doch mangelt ihm die Kraft,
yet it lacks the power

Wer nur in Jesu bleibt,
Whoever just remains in Jesus,
die Selbstverleugnung treibt,
compelling self-discipline
daß er in Gottes Liebe sich gläubig übe,
that he might faithfully practice God’s love,
hat, wenn das Irdische verschwunden,
has, when the temporal vanishes,
sich selbst und Gott gefunden.

Mein Herze glaubt und liebt.
My heart believes and loves.
Denn Jesu süße Flammen,
For Jesus’ sweet flames,
aus den’ die meinen stammen,
from which these of mine arise,
gehn über mich zusammen,
consume me altogether
weil er sich mir ergibt.
for he is devoted to me.
13. RECITATIVO TENORE
O Armut, der kein Reichtum gleicht!
O poverty, which no opulence can match!
Wenn aus dem Herzen
die ganze Welt entweicht
When the entire world retreats
from the heart
und Jesus nur allein regiert,
and only Jesus alone governs,
so wird ein Christ zu Gott geführt!
then is a Christian lead to God!
Gib, Gott, daß wir es nicht verscherzen!
Grant, God, that we do not squander this!
14. CORO
Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan,
Whatever God does, it is beneficial,
dabei will ich verbleiben.
by this I do remain.
Es mag mich auf die rauhe Bahn
Not, Tod und Elend treiben;
Agony, death and misery may constrain
me to the rugged path;
so wird Gott mich
ganz väterlich
in seinen Armen halten;
then God, entirely as a father,
will hold me in his arms;
drum laß ich ihn nur walten.
thus I just let him prevail.
