Cantata 63

Text for Cantata 63
Christen, ätzet diesen Tag
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. CORO
Christen, ätzet diesen Tag
Christians, etch this day
in Metall und Marmorsteine!
in metal and stone of marble!
Kommt und eilt mit mir zur Krippen
Come and hasten with me to the manger
und erweist mit frohen Lippen
and render with glad lips
euren Dank und eure Pflicht;
your thanks and your debt;
denn der Strahl, so da einbricht,
for the rays there so emitted
zeigt sich euch zum Gnadenscheine.
manifest for you beams of grace.

2. RECITATIVO ALTO
O selger Tag! o ungemeines Heute,
O blessed day! O profound today,
an dem das Heil der Welt,
in which the salvation of the world,
der Schilo, den Gott schon im Paradies
dem menschlichen Geschlecht verhieß,
the champion, whom God, once in paradise,
promised to the human race,
nunmehro sich vollkommen dargestellt
henceforth is fully presented
und suchet Israel von der Gefangenschaft
und Sklavenketten des Satans zu erretten.
and seeks to save Israel from Satan’s captivity
and chains of slavery.
Du liebster Gott, was sind wir arme doch?
You dearest God, what indeed are we the poor?
Ein abgefallnes Volk, so dich verlassen;
A fallen people, abandoning you so;
und dennoch willst du uns nicht hassen;
and regardless you will not loath us;
denn eh wir sollen noch nach dem Verdienst zu Boden liegen,
for before we should lay in the ground as we deserved,
eh muß die Gottheit sich bequemen,
sooner the divine brought himself
die menschliche Natur an sich zu nehmen
to assume the nature of a human
und auf der Erden im Hirtenstall zu einem Kinde werden.
and become a child upon this earth in a cattle stall.
O unbegreifliches, doch seliges Verfügen!
O incomprehensible, yet blessed directive!

3. ARIA DUETTO SOPRANO E BASSO
Gott, du hast es wohl gefüget,
God, you indeed have devised
was uns itzo widerfährt.
what now befalls us.
Drum laßt uns auf ihn stets trauen
Thus let us ever trust in him
und auf seine Gnade bauen,
and build upon his grace,
denn er hat uns dies beschert,
for he has bestowed this on us,
was uns ewig nun vergnüget.
what now eternally cheers us.

4. RECITATIVO TENORE
So kehret sich nun heut
So turn now today
das bange Leid,
that anxious sorrow,
mit welchem Israel geängstet und beladen,
with which Israel is worried and burdened,
in lauter Heil und Gnaden.
into sheer salvation and grace.
Der Löw aus Davids Stamme ist erschienen,
A lion has appeared out of David’s stem,
sein Bogen ist gespannt, das Schwert ist schon gewetzt,
his bow is taunt, the sword is already sharpened,
womit er uns in vor’ge Freiheit setzt.
by which he will restore for us freedom of old.

5. ARIA DUETTO ALTO E TENORE
Ruft und fleht den Himmel an,
Call and implore Heaven,
kommt, ihr Christen, kommt zum Reihen,
come, you Christians, come to rank,
ihr sollt euch ob dem erfreuen,
you shall in this be glad,
was Gott hat anheut getan!
at what God has done today!
Da uns seine Huld verpfleget
For his favor caters to us
und mit so viel Heil beleget,
and assigns such great healing,
daß man nicht g’nug danken kann.
that one cannot comprehend it.

6. RECITATIVO BASSO
Verdoppelt euch demnach,
Double yourselves accordingly,
ihr heißen Andachtsflammen,
you scorching flames of devotion,
und schlagt in Demut brünstiglich zusammen!
and lap together impassioned in humility!
Steigt fröhlich himmelan
Climb blissfully toward Heaven
und danket Gott vor dies, was er getan!
and thank God for that which he has done!

7. CORO
Höchster, schau in Gnaden an
Most High, look with grace upon
diese Glut gebückter Seelen!
these souls bowed in ardor!
Laß den Dank, den wir dir bringen,
Let the thanks, which we bring you to,
angenehme vor dir klingen,
sound pleasant before you,
laß uns stets in Segen gehn,
let us ever walk in blessing,
aber niemals nicht geschehn,
yet never let it occur
daß uns der Satan möge quälen.
that Satan may torment us.
