Ein ungefärbt Gemüte
An untainted disposition
von deutscher Treu und Güte
of every day loyalty and goodness
macht uns vor Gott und Menschen schön.
makes us beautiful before God and humanity.
Der Christen Tun und Handel,
Christians’ acts and dealings,
ihr ganzer Lebenswandel
their entire way of life,
soll auf dergleichen Fuße stehn.
should stand on like footing.
2. RECITATIVO TENORE
Die Redlichkeit ist eine von den Gottesgaben.
Integrity is one of God’s gifts.
Daß sie bei unsrer Zeit
so wenig Menschen haben,
That so few humans in our time possess it
das macht, sie bitten Gott nicht drum.
is caused by them not asking God for it.
Denn von Natur geht unsers Herzens Dichten
mit lauter Bösem um;
For by nature the dictates of our heart
meander in pure meanness;
soll’s seinen Weg auf etwas Gutes richten,
should its path aim toward something good
so muß es Gott durch seinen Geist regieren
then it must be governed by God through his Spirit
und auf der Bahn der Tugend führen.

Verlangst du Gott zum Freunde,
If you long for God as a friend
so mache dir den Nächsten nicht zum Feinde
then do not make an enemy of your neighbor
durch Falschheit, Trug und List!
by falsehood, deception or deceit!
Ein Christ soll sich der Taubenart bestreben
A Christian should strive to be dove-like
und ohne Falsch und Tücke leben.
and live without falsity or malice.
Mach aus dir selbst ein solches Bild,
Make of yourself such an impression
wie du den Nächsten haben willt!
as you would desire in your neighbor!

Alles nun, das ihr wollet,
All now that you desire
daß euch die Leute tun sollen,

Die Heuchelei ist eine Brut,
Hypocrisy is a brood

Wie? lassen sich denn Christen
dergleichen auch gelüsten?
How then, do Christians also crave such things?
Gott sei’s geklagt! die Redlichkeit ist teuer.
God protest! integrity is precious.
Manch teuflisch Ungeheuer sieht wie ein Engel aus.
Many a demonic monster appears as an angel.
Man kehrt den Wolf hinein,
One conceals a wolf inside
den Schafspelz kehrt man raus.
displaying sheep fleece on the outside.
Wie könnt es ärger sein?
How could it be worse?
Verleumden, Schmähn und Richten,
Slander, sarcasm and judging,
Verdammen und Vernichten
damnation and obliteration
ist überall gemein.

Der liebe Gott behüte mich dafür!

Treu und Wahrheit sei der Grund
Loyalty and truth should be the basis
aller deiner Sinnen,
of all your intent,
wie von außen Wort und Mund,
as outwardly from word and mouth,
sei das Herz von innen.
be the heart within.
Gütig sein und tugendreich
Be benevolent and rich in virtue
macht uns Gott und Engeln gleich.
make us akin to God and angels.
6. CORALE
O Gott, du frommer Gott,
O God, you devout God,
du Brunnquell aller Gaben,
the fountainhead of all gifts,
ohn den nichts ist, was ist,
without whom nothing is that is,
von dem wir alles haben,
from whom we have everything,
gesunden Leib gib mir,
grant me a healthy body,
und daß in solchem Leib
and that in such a body
ein unverletzte Seel
und rein Gewissen bleib.
resides an unscathed soul
and chaste conscience.
