Höchsterwünschtes Freudenfest,
Supremely desirable feast of joy,
das der Herr zu seinem Ruhme
which the Lord, to his glory
im erbauten Heiligtume
in this erected sanctuary,
uns vergnügt begehen lässt.

2. RECITATIVO BASSO
Unendlich großer Gott, 
Everlasting great God,
ach wende dich zu uns,
oh turn yourself toward us,
zu dem erwähleten Geschlechte,
unto the chosen generation
und zum Gebete deiner Knechte!
and unto the supplication of your servant!
Ach, laß vor dich durch ein inbrünstig Singen
der Lippen Opfer bringen!
Oh, let this offering of the lips be brought before you,
though ardent singing!
Wir weihen unsre Brust dir offenbar
We consecrate our breasts openly before you
zum Dankaltar.

Du, den kein Haus, kein Tempel fasst,
You, whom no house nor temple constrains,
da du kein Ziel noch Grenzen hast,
for you have neither termination nor boundary,
laß dir dies Haus gefällig sein, 
let this house be pleasing to you,
es sei dein Angesicht ein wahrer Gnadenstuhl, ein Freudenlicht.
may your countenance be a true seat of mercy, a light of joy.

Was des Höchsten Glanz erfüllt,
That which the splendor of the Most High pervades
wird in keine Nacht verhüllt,

4. RECITATIVO SOPRANO
Wie könnte dir, du höchstes Angesicht,
How could for you, you supreme countenance,
da dein unendlich helles Licht
where your everlasting bright light
bis in verborgne Gründe siehet,
is apparent even unto the secluded ground,
ein Haus gefällig sein?

Es schleicht sich Eitelkeit allhie an allen Enden ein.
Vanity creeps everywhere unto all ends [of the earth].
Wo deine Herrlichkeit einziehet,
Wherever your splendor settles
da muß die Wohnung rein
there the dwelling must be pure
und dieses Gastes würdig sein.
and these guests worthy.
Hier wirkt nichts Menschenkraft,
Here human power achieves nothing,
drum laß dein Auge offenstehen
thus let your eyes remain open
und gnädig auf uns gehen;
and proceed mercifully before us;
so legen wir in heilger Freude dir
thus we lay before you, with sacred joy
die Farren und die Opfer unsrer Lieder
like young bulls and sacrifice, our songs,
vor deinem Throne nieder
lowered, before your throne
und tragen dir den Wunsch in Andacht für.
and carry before you this wish in devotion.

5. ARIA SOPRANO
Hilf, Gott, daß es uns gelingt,
Help God, that we might thrive
und dein Feuer in uns dringt,
and that your fire infuse us,
daß es auch in dieser Stunde
that it too in this hour
wie in Esaiae Munde
as did the voice of Isaiah,
seiner Wirkung Kraft erhält
sustain its power of effect
und uns heilig vor dich stellt.
and presents us as holy before you.

6. CORALE
Heilger Geist ins Himmels Throne,
Holy Spirit upon Heaven’s throne,
gleicher Gott von Ewigkeit
mit dem Vater und dem Sohne,
equal to God the Father
and the Son in eternity,
der Betrübten Trost und Freud!
comfort and joy to the sorrowful!
Allen Glauben, den ich find,
Every belief that I can possess
hast du in mir angezündt,
you have kindled within me,
über mir in Gnaden walte,
presiding over me in grace
ferner deine Gnad erhalte.
so long as your grade endures.

Deine Hilfe zu mir sende,
Send to me your aid,
o du edler Herzensgast!
O, you noble guest of the heart!
Und das gute Werk vollende,
And complete the good work
das du angefangen hast.
which you have begun.
Blas in mir das Fünklein auf,
Blow upon the spark in me
bis daß nach vollbrachtem Lauf
ich den Auserwählten gleiche
until I, following the completed race,

7. RECITATIVO TENORE
Ihr Heiligen, erfreuet euch,
You saints, rejoice,
eilt, eilet, euren Gott zu loben:
hasten, hasten, to praise your God:
das Herze sei erhoben
may the heart be elevated
zu Gottes Ehrenreich,
up to God’s kingdom of glory,
von dannen er auf dich,
he departs from there unto you,
du heilge Wohnung, 
you sacred dwelling place,
siehet und ein gereinigt Herz zu sich
von dieser eitlen Erde ziehet.
behold and protract a purified heart
out of this vain earth.

Ein Stand, so billig selig heißt,
A site so easily called blessed,
man schaut hier Vater, Sohn und Geist.
here one views Father, Son and Spirit.
Wohlan, ihr gotterfüllte Seelen!
So then, you souls instilled by God!
Ihr werdet nun das beste Teil erwählen;
You will now choose the finest portion;
die Welt kann euch kein Labsal geben,
the world can offer you no refreshment,
ihr könnt in Gott allein vergnügt und selig leben.
you can, in God alone, live comfortably and blessed.

8. ARIA TENORE
Des Höchsten Gegenwart allein
The presence of the Most High alone
kann unsrer Freuden Ursprung sein.
can be our source of joy.
Vergehe, Welt, mit deiner Pracht,
Fade away world along with your pomp,
in Gott ist, was uns glücklich macht!
in God is what will make us content!

9. RECITATIVO (DUETTO) BASSO E SOPRANO
B: Kann wohl ein Mensch zu Gott im Himmel steigen?
Can a person actually scale up to God in Heaven?
S: Der Glaube kann den Schöpfer zu ihm neigen.
The believer can bend the creator down to himself.
B: Er ist oft ein zu schwaches Band.
He is often of no stability.
S: Gott führet selbst und stärkt des Glaubens Hand,
God himself directs and bolsters the believer’s hand
    den Fürsatz zu erreichen.
to reach the goal.
B: Wie aber, wenn des Fleisches Schwachheit wollte weichen?
But how, when the weakness of the flesh wants to succumb?
S: Des Höchsten Kraft wird mächtig in den Schwachen.
The power of the Most High will be force for the weak.
B: Die Welt wird sie verlachen.
The world will laugh at them.
S: Wer Gottes Huld besitzt, verachtet solchen Spott.
Whoever possesses the favor of God, spurns such ridicule.
B: Was wird ihr außer diesen fehlen!
Beyond this so much fails them!
S: Ihr einzger Wunsch, ihr alles ist in Gott.
Their single wish, their everything is in God.
B: Gott ist unsichtbar und entfernet:
God is invisible and distanced:
S: Wohl uns, daß unser Glaube lernet,
Blessed are we that our faith learns
    im Geiste seinen Gott zu schauen.
to spiritually look to its God.
B: Ihr Leib hält sie gefangen.
Their bodies hold them captive.
S: Des Höchsten Huld befördert ihr Verlangen,
The favor of the Most High deploys their desires,
    denn er erbaut den Ort, da man ihn herrlich schaut.
for he constructed the site where one can behold him in splendor.
Both: Da er den Glauben nun belohnt
Where he now rewardsthe believer
und bei uns wohnt,
and abides with us,
bei uns als seinen Kindern,
with us as his children,
so kann die Welt und Sterblichkeit die Freude nicht vermindern.
so can the world and mortality not diminish joy.

10. ARIA (DUETTO) SOPRANO E BASSO
O wie wohl ist uns geschehn,
O how well it transpires for us,
daß sich Gott ein Haus ersehn!
that God is evident in this house!
Schmeckt und sehet doch zugleich,
Do taste and see, both at once,
Gott sei freundlich gegen euch.
God is benevolent unto you.
Schüttet eure Herzen aus
Pour out your hearts
hier vor Gottes Thron und Haus!
here before God’s throne and house!

11. RECITATIVO BASSO
Wohlan demnach, du heilige Gemeine,
Now then accordingly, you sacred congregation,
bereite dich zur heilgen Lust!
prepare yourself for sacred bliss!
Gott wohnt nicht nur in einer jeden Brust,
God not only dwells in each and every breast,
er baut sich hier ein Haus.
he himself constructs here a house.
Wohlan, so rüstet euch mit Geist und Gaben aus,
Now then, thus furnish yourselves with spirit and bounty,
daß ihm sowohl dein Herz als auch dies Haus gefalle!
that your heart, as does this house, might please him!

12. CORALE
Sprich Ja zu meinen Taten,
Speak yes to my deeds,
hilf selbst das Beste raten;
give counsel for the best;
den Anfang, Mittl und Ende,
the beginning, middle and end,
ach, Herr, zum besten wende!
oh, Lord, change for the better!

Mit Segen mich beschütte,
Shower me with blessing,
mein Herz sei deine Hütte,
may my heart be your shelter,
dein Wort sei meine Speise,
may your word be my fare,
bis ich gen Himmel reise!
until I journey up to Heaven!
