Cantata 186

Text for Cantata 186
Ärgre dich, o Seele, nicht
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

ERSTER TEIL (Part 1)

1. CORO
Ärgre dich, o Seele, nicht,
Be not confounded, O soul,
daß das allerhöchste Licht,
that the supreme light,
Gottes Glanz und Ebenbild,
Gods brilliance and likeness
sich in Knechtsgestalt verhüllt,
is disguised in the form of a servant,
ärgre dich, o Seele, nicht!
be not confounded, O soul,

2. RECITATIVO BASSO
Die Knechtsgestalt, die Not, der Mangel
The form of a servant, the need, the lacking
trifft Christi Glieder nicht allein,
do not merely apply to Christ’s limbs,
es will ihr Haupt selbst arm und elend sein.
even his head will be impoverished and  wretched.
Und ist nicht Reichtum, ist nicht Überfluß
And is not wealth, is not abundance
des Satans Angel, so man mit Sorgfalt meiden muß?
the blade of Satan, that one must evade with diligence?
Wird dir im Gegenteil die Last zu viel zu tragen,
Will, on the other hand, the burden be too much for you to bear,
wenn Armut dich beschwert,
when poverty burdens you,
wenn Hunger dich verzehrt,
when hunger consumes you,
und willst sogleich verzagen,
and will you at once despair,
so denkst du nicht an Jesum, an dein Heil?
then do you not think on Jesus, on your salvation?
Hast du wie jenes Volk nicht bald zu essen,
Are you, like some people, not soon to eat,
so seufzest du: Ach Herr, wie lange willst du mein vergessen?
so you sigh: Oh Lord, how long will you forget me?

3. ARIA BASSO
Bist du, der mir helfen soll,
Are you he who shall help me;
eilst du nicht, mir beizustehen?
do you not hasten to stand beside me?
Mein Gemüt ist zweifelsvoll,
My courage is full of doubt,
du verwirfst vielleicht mein Flehen;
you possibly reject my supplication;
doch, o Seele, zweifle nicht,
still, O soul, do not doubt,
laß Vernunft dich nicht bestricken.
let reason not entrance you.
Deinen Helfer, Jakobs Licht,
kannst du in der Schrift erblicken.
You can glimpse of your helper,
the light of Jacob, in scripture.

4. RECITATIVO TENORE
Ach, daß ein Christ so sehr
vor seinen Körper sorgt!
Oh, that a Christian worries
so much for his body!
Was ist er mehr?
What else is he?
Ein Bau von Erden,
A composition of earth,
der wieder muß zur Erde werden,
that must turn back into earth,
ein Kleid, so nur geborgt.
a garment, but only borrowed.
Er könnte ja das beste Teil erwählen,
He could of course choose a better one,
so seine Hoffnung nie betrügt:
so never to deny his hope:
das Heil der Seelen,
the salvation of the soul,
so in Jesu liegt.
which lies in Jesus.
O selig! wer ihn in der Schrift erblickt,
O blessed! whoever glimpses of him in scripture,
wie er durch seine Lehren auf alle,
die ihn hören, ein geistlich Manna schickt!
how he, through his teachings,
delivers a sacred manna to all who hear him!
Drum, wenn der Kummer gleich das Herze nagt und frisst,
Thus when grievance once gnaws and gorges the heart,
so schmeckt und sehet doch, wie freundlich Jesus ist.
then taste and see indeed how kind Jesus is.

5. ARIA TENORE
Mein Heiland läßt sich merken
My Savior makes himself apparent
in seinen Gnadenwerken.
in his works of mercy.
Da er sich kräftig weist,
Where he powerfully reveals,
den schwachen Geist zu lehren,
by instructing the weak spirit,
den matten Leib zu nähren,
by nourishing the languid body,
dies sättigt Leib und Geist.
this quenches body and soul.

6. CORALE
Ob sichs anließ, als wollt er nicht,
Although it appears as if he is unwilling,
laß dich es nicht erschrecken;
let it not alarm you;
denn wo er ist am besten mit,
for where he is the most present,
da will ers nicht entdecken.
there he will not reveal it.
Sein Wort laß dir gewißer sein,
His word allows you certainty,
und ob dein Herz spräch lauter Nein,
and though your heart says nothing but no,
so laß dir doch nicht grauen.
so still do not dismay.

ZWEITER TEIL (Part 2)

7. RECITATIVO BASSO
Es ist die Welt die große Wüstenei;
The world, it is a great wasteland;
der Himmel wird zu Erz, die Erde wird zu Eisen,
the sky can turn to bronze, the earth can turn to iron,
wenn Christen durch den Glauben weisen,
when Christians demonstrate through their faith,
daß Christi Wort ihr größter Reichtum sei;
that Christ’s word is their greatest possession;
der Nahrungssegen scheint
the blessing of sustenance seems
von ihnen fast zu fliehen,
to almost flee before them,
ein steter Mangel wird beweint,
a constant lacking will be bemoaned,
damit sie nur der Welt sich desto mehr entziehen;
with which they withdraw even more from the world;
da findet erst des Heilands Wort, der höchste Schatz,
only here, by the Savior’s word,
the highest treasure finds
in ihren Herzen Platz:
a place in their hearts:
ja, jammert ihn des Volkes dort,
yes, if the people there wail to him,
so muß auch hier sein Herze brechen
so here too must his heart breach
und über sie den Segen sprechen.
and [he] speaks to them the benediction.

8. ARIA SOPRANO
Die Armen will der Herr umarmen
The Lord will embrace the poor
mit Gnaden hier und dort;
with grace, here and abroad;
er schenket ihnen aus Erbarmen
he bestows on them, out of mercy,
den höchsten Schatz, das Lebenswort.
the highest treasure, the word of life.

9. RECITATIVO ALTO
Nun mag die Welt mit ihrer Lust vergehen;
Now may the world with its desires pass away;
bricht gleich der Mangel ein,
deficiency immediately closes in,
doch kann die Seele freudig sein.
yet the soul can be joyful.
Wird durch dies Jammertal der Gang
If the passage through this veil of tears becomes
zu schwer, zu lang,
too difficult, too long,
in Jesu Wort liegt Heil und Segen.
in Jesus word rests salvation and blessing.
Es ist ihres Fußes Leuchte und ein Licht auf ihren Wegen.
It is a lamp to their feet and a light upon their paths.
Wer gläubig durch die Wüste reist,
Whoever faithfully journeys through the wilderness,
wird durch dies Wort getränkt, gespeist;
will be quenched and nourished by this word;
der Heiland öffnet selbst, nach diesem Worte,
the Savior himself, according to this word, opens
ihm einst des Paradieses Pforte,
before him, one day, the gates to paradise,
und nach vollbrachtem Lauf
and after the completed course
setzt er den Gläubigen die Krone auf.
he sets the crown upon the believer.

10. ARIA (DUETTO) SOPRANO ED ALTO
Laß, Seele, kein Leiden
Allow, soul, no suffering
von Jesu dich scheiden,
to separate you from Jesus,
sei, Seele, getreu!
be, soul, faithful!
Dir bleibet die Krone
For you remains the crown
aus Gnaden zu Lohne,
out of grace, as reward,
wenn du von Banden des Leibes nun frei.
when you are freed from your bodily bonds.

11. CORALE
Die Hoffnung wart’ der rechten Zeit,
Hope awaits the proper time,
was Gottes Wort zusaget.
as pledged by God’s word.
Wenn das geschehen soll zur Freud,
When, for joy, that shall occur
setzt Gott kein g’wisse Tage.
God sets no certain date.
Er weiß wohl, wenn’s am besten ist,
He knows well when it will be for the best,
und braucht an uns kein arge List,
and spends no arrant guile upon us,
des solln wir ihm vertrauen.
this we shall trust of him.
