Cantata 153

Text for Cantata 153
Schau, lieber Gott, wie meine Feind
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. CORALE
Schau, lieber Gott, wie meine Feind,
Behold, dear God, how my foes,
damit ich stets muß kämpfen,
with whom I must continually battle,
so listig und so mächtig seind,
are so cunning and so mighty,
daß sie mich leichtlich dämpfen!
that they so easily stifle me!
Herr, wo mich deine Gnad nicht hält,
Lord, where your grace does not maintain me
so kann der Teufel, Fleisch und Welt
there can the Devil, flesh and world
mich leicht in Unglück stürzen.
easily plunge me into calamity.

2. RECITATIVO ALTO
Mein liebster Gott, ach laß dichs doch erbarmen,
My dearest God, oh do have mercy,
ach hilf doch, hilf mir Armen!
oh do help, help me a poor one!
Ich wohne hier bei lauter Löwen und bei Drachen,
I live here midst rampant lions and midst dragons,
und diese wollen mir durch Wut und Grimmigkeit
in kurzer Zeit den Garaus völlig machen.
and these will, through fury and grimness
in a short course kill me off.

3. ARIA BASSO
Fürchte dich nicht, ich bin mit dir.
Fear not, I am with you.
Weiche nicht, ich bin dein Gott;
Succumb not, I am your God;
ich stärke dich, ich helfe dir auch
I will strengthen you, I will help you also
durch die rechte Hand meiner Gerechtigkeit.
by the right hand of my righteousness.

4. RECITATIVO TENORE
Du sprichst zwar, lieber Gott, zu meiner Seelen Ruh
You in fact speak, dear God, for my soul’s rest
mir einen Trost in meinen Leiden zu.
for solace in my suffering.
Ach, aber meine Plage
But alas, by afflictions
vergrößert sich von Tag zu Tage,
intensify from day to day,
denn meiner Feinde sind so viel,
for my enemies are so many,
mein Leben ist ihr Ziel,
my life is their objective,
ihr Bogen wird auf mich gespannt,
their bows are drawn toward me,
sie richten ihre Pfeile zum Verderben,
they aim their arrows upon destruction,
ich soll von ihren Händen sterben;
I should die by their hands;
Gott! meine Not ist dir bekannt,
God! my hardship is known to you,
die ganze Welt wird mir zur Marterhöhle;
the entire world for me becomes a den of torture;
hilf, Helfer, hilf! errette meine Seele!
help helper, help! deliver my soul!

5. CORALE
Und ob gleich alle Teufel
And if suddenly all devils
dir wollten widerstehn,
would rise against you,
so wird doch ohne Zweifel
then indeed, without doubt, would
Gott nicht zurücke gehn;
God not retreat;
was er ihm fürgenommen
whatever he takes on
und was er haben will,
and whatever he wants,
das muß doch endlich kommen
that must indeed finally come to pass
zu seinem Zweck und Ziel.
for his purpose and goal.

6. ARIA TENORE
Stürmt nur, stürmt, ihr Trübsalswetter,
Storm on, storm, you tempest of tribulation,
wallt, ihr Fluten, auf mich los!
seethe, you torrents, over me go!
Schlagt, ihr Unglücksflammen,
Lap, you flames of misfortune,
über mich zusammen,
altogether over me,
stört, ihr Feinde, meine Ruh,
disrupt, you foes, my rest,
spricht mir doch Gott tröstlich zu:
God, by contrast, speaks comfortingly to me:
ich bin dein Hort und Erretter.
I am your refuge and redeemer.

7. RECITATIVO BASSO
Getrost! mein Herz,
Comfort! my heart,
erdulde deinen Schmerz,
withstand your pain,
laß dich dein Kreuz nicht unterdrücken!
let not your cross weigh you down!
Gott wird dich schon
zu rechter Zeit erquicken;
God will at the proper time
refresh you at once;
muß doch sein lieber Sohn,
dein Jesus, in noch zarten Jahren
viel größre Not erfahren,
his dear Son, your Jesus,
at a tender age,
had to endure much greater peril,
da ihm der Wüterich Herodes
die äußerste Gefahr des Todes
mit mörderischen Fäusten droht!
as the wrathful Herod
impeded upon him the utmost risk of death
with murderous fists!
Kaum kömmt er auf die Erden,
Hardly was he upon the earth,
so muß er schon ein Flüchtling werden!
than he must then become a fugitive!
Wohlan, mit Jesu tröste dich
Well then, console yourself in Jesus
und glaube festiglich:
and firmly believe:
denjenigen, die hier mit Christo leiden,
for those who suffer here with Christ,
will er das Himmelreich bescheiden.
will he elect the kingdom of heaven.

8. ARIA ALTO
Soll ich meinen Lebenslauf
unter Kreuz und Trübsal führen,
If my course of life is routed
through cross and tribulation,
hört es doch im Himmel auf.
it will still end in heaven.
Da ist lauter Jubilieren,
There is vast jubilation,
daselbsten verwechselt mein Jesus das Leiden
the very same has my Jesus himself exchanged for suffering,
mit seliger Wonne, mit ewigen Freuden.
with blessed bliss, with eternal joy.

9. CORALE
Drum will ich, weil ich lebe noch,
Thus I will, while I still live,
das Kreuz dir fröhlich tragen nach;
gladly carry the cross behind you;
mein Gott, mach mich darzu bereit,
my God, prepares me for this,
es dient zum Besten allezeit!
it serves for the best at all times!

Hilf mir mein Sach recht greifen an,
Help me to rightly perceive my affairs,
daß ich mein’ Lauf vollenden kann,
that I can complete my course,
hilf mir auch zwingen Fleisch und Blut,
help me also to compel flesh and blood,
für Sünd und Schanden mich behüt!
safeguard me from sin and disgrace!

Erhalt mein Herz im Glauben rein,
Preserve my heart in pure faith,
so leb und sterb ich dir allein;
so will I live and die in you alone;
Jesu, mein Trost, hör mein Begier,
Jesus, my comfort, hear my wish
o mein Heiland, wär ich bei dir!
O my Savior, were I with you!
