1. CORO
Erforsche mich, Gott, und erfahre mein Herz; 
Examine me, God, and search my heart;
prüfe mich und erfahre, wie ichs meine!
test me and learn, what is my meaning!

2. RECITATIVO TENORE
Ach, daß der Fluch, so dort die Erde schlägt
Alas, that this curse that so pommels the earth
auch derer Menschen Herz getrogen!
also has deceived the human heart !
Wer kann auf gute Früchte hoffen,
Who can hope for good fruits
da dieser Fluch bis in die Seele dringet,
for this curse bores through to the soul
so daß sie Sündendornen bringet
so that it brings forth thorns of sin
und Lasterdisteln trägt.
and bears thistles of vice.
Doch wollen sich oftmals die Kinder der Höllen
Indeed, Hell‘s kindred often will
in Engel des Lichtes verstellen;
be disguised as angels of light;
man soll bei dem verderbten Wesen
one is expected, beside such corrupt beings,
von diesen Dornen Trauben lesen.
to harvest grapes from these thorns.
Ein Wolf will sich mit reiner Wolle decken,
A wolf will cloak himself with pure wool,
doch bricht ein Tag herein,
yet a day is dawning
der wird, ihr Heuchler, euch ein Schrecken,
ja unerträglich sein.

be a terror, yes, unendurable.

Es kömmt ein Tag,
A day is coming
so das Verborgne richtet,
when that concealed is judged,
vor dem die Heuchelei erzittern mag.
before which hypocrisy should shutter.
Denn seines Eifers Grimm vernichtet,
For the fierceness of his zeal obliterates
was Heuchelei und List erdichtet.
what hypocrisy and deceit concoct.

4. RECITATIVO BASSO
Die Himmel selber sind nicht rein,
The heavens themselves are not pure
wie soll es nun ein Mensch vor diesem Richter sein?
how shall then a person be before this judge?
Doch wer durch Jesu Blut gereinigt,
Yet whoever is purified by Jesus’ blood,
im Glauben sich mit ihm vereinigt,
unified with him in faith,
weiß, daß  er ihm kein hartes Urteil spricht.
knows that he pronounces him no harsh sentence.
Kränkt ihn die Sünde noch,
Though sin still infects him,
der Mangel seiner Werke,
the inadequacy of his deeds,
er hat in Christo doch
he has in Christ even so
Gerechtigkeit und Stärke.
righteousness and strength.

Uns treffen zwar der Sünden Flecken,
Admittedly the stains of sin affect us
so Adams Fall auf uns gebracht.

Allein, wer sich zu Jesu Wunden,
dem großen Strom voll Blut gefunden,
However, whoever has found
the great stream of blood from Jesus’ wounds
wird dadurch wieder rein gemacht.

Dein Blut, der edle Saft,
Your blood, that noble fluid,
hat solche Stärk und Kraft,
has such power and might,
daß auch ein Tröpflein kleine
that even on little droplet
die ganze Welt kann reine,
can cleanse the entire world
ja, gar aus Teufels Rachen
frei, los und ledig machen.

from the jaws of the Devil.
