Sehet, welch eine Liebe hat uns der Vater erzeiget, 
Behold what a love the Father has shown us
daß wir Gottes Kinder heißen.
that we be called God’s children.

2. CORALE
Das hat er alles uns getan,
All this he has done for us
sein groß Lieb zu zeigen an.
to reveal his great love.
Des freu sich alle Christenheit
For this all Christendom be glad
und dank ihm des in Ewigkeit.
and thank him for this in eternity.

3. RECITATIVO ALTO
Geh, Welt! behalte nur das Deine,
Go away, world! simply keep what is yours,
ich will und mag nichts von dir haben,
I will have and want nothing from you,
der Himmel ist nun meine,
heaven is now mine,
an diesem soll sich meine Seele laben.
in this my soul shall refresh itself.
Dein Gold ist ein vergänglich Gut,
Your gold is a fleeting good,
dein Reichtum ist geborget,
your riches are borrowed,
wer dies besitzt, der ist gar schlecht versorget.
whoever possesses these is actually poorly served.
Drum sag ich mit getrostem Mut:

Was frag ich nach der Welt
What need I ask of the world
und allen ihren Schätzen
and all its treasures
wenn ich mich nur an dir,
mein Jesu, kann ergötzen!
when I can simply regale
myself in you, my Jesus?
Dich hab ich einzig mir
zur Wollust fürgestellt,
I have you intended
solely for my pleasure,
du, du bist meine Lust:
you, you are my pleasure:
was frag ich nach der Welt!
what need I ask of the world?

5. ARIA SOPRANO
Was die Welt in sich hält,
Whatever the world contains
muß als wie ein Rauch vergehen.
must vanish like smoke.
Aber was mir Jesus gibt
However, whatever Jesus gives me
und was meine Seele liebt,
and that which my soul loves,
bleibet fest und ewig stehen.
remains solid and stands eternal.

6. RECITATIVO BASSO
Der Himmel bleibet mir gewiß,
Heaven remains certain to me
und den besitz ich schon im Glauben.
and I already occupy it in faith.
Der Tod, die Welt und Sünde,
Death, the world and sin,
ja selbst das ganze Höllenheer
yes even the entire army of hell
kann mir, als einem Gotteskinde,
denselben nun und nimmermehr
aus meiner Seele rauben.
cannot, now nor never again,
rob my soul of this, as a child of God.
Nur dies, nur einzig dies macht mir noch Kümmernis,
Just this, just this one thing, still gives me pause,
daß ich noch länger soll auf dieser Welt verweilen;
that I still must linger upon this world;
denn Jesus will den Himmel mit mir teilen,
for Jesus will share heaven with me,
und darzu hat er mich erkoren,
and for this he has chosen me,
deswegen ist er Mensch geboren.
for this reason was he born as a human.

Von der Welt verlang ich nichts,
I require nothing of the world,
wenn ich nur den Himmel erbe.
if I only inherit heaven.
Alles, alles geb ich hin,
Everything, everything, do I surrender,
weil ich genung versichert bin,
for I am well enough assured
daß ich ewig nicht verderbe.
that I will not be doomed eternally.

Gute Nacht, o Wesen, 
Good Night, O being
das die Welt erlesen!
which the world has chosen!
Mir gefällst du nicht.
You please me not.
Gute Nacht, ihr Sünden, 
Good Night, you sins,
bleibet weit dahinten,
remain far behind me,
kommt nicht mehr ans Licht!
come no more into the light!
Gute Nacht, du Stolz und Pracht!
Good Night, you pride and pomp!
Dir sei ganz, du Lasterleben, 
Gute Nacht gegeben!
To you wholly, dissolute life,
be bid Good Night!
